Directions in Russian

This lesson is dedicated to directions: we will learn how to name various directions and practice to ask directions in the street.

Listen to the audio carefully and read the transcript. Feel free to listen to the audio as many times as you need until all the words sound natural.

Basic vocabulary

Right:

пра́во – right
спра́ва – from the right, on the right side
напра́во – to the right

Здесь на́до поверну́ть напра́во.
Here it’s necessary to turn right.

Спра́ва от вас нахо́дится продукто́вый магази́н.
On your right there is a grocery store.

Ве́тер ду́ет спра́ва.
The wind is blowing from the right.

Left:

ле́во – left
сле́ва – from the left, on the left side
нале́во – to the left

Посмотри́те нале́во.
Look on the left. (plural of formal)

Он сиди́т сле́ва от меня́.
He is sitting on my left.

В иври́те пи́шут спра́ва нале́во.
In Hebrew they write from right to left.

Top:

верх – top
вверху́ – up, above, at the top
наве́рх – up, upward, to the top
вверх по ле́стнице – upstairs

Подними́тесь наве́рх и подожди́те меня́ там.
Go upstairs and wait for me there. (plural of formal)

Bottom:

низ – bottom
внизу́ – at the foot, below
вниз – down, downwards
вниз по ле́стнице – downstairs

У меня́ боли́т внизу́ живота́.
I have pain in my lower stomach.

Туале́т нахо́дится вниз по ле́стнице.
The toilet is downstairs.

Clockwise

по часово́й стре́лке – clockwise
про́тив часово́й стре́лки – anticlockwise / counterclockwise

Поверни́те выключа́тель по часово́й стре́лке.
Turn the switch clockwise. (plural of formal)

Cardinal points *

се́вер – North
юг – South
за́пад – West
восто́к – East

Пляж нахо́дится на ю́ге го́рода.
The beach is located in the south of the city.

Он живёт на кра́йнем се́вере.
He lives in the far North.

Со́лнце встаёт на восто́ке и сади́тся на за́паде.
The sun rises in the East and sets in the West.

Asking directions

– Подскажи́те, пожа́луйста, где нахо́дится ближа́йшая ста́нция метро́?
– Пря́мо до светофо́ра и нале́во.
– Could you tell me please, where is the nearest metro station?
– Straight ahead to the traffic light and to the left.

– Извини́те, вы не зна́ете, здесь есть побли́зости больни́ца?
– Ближа́йшая больни́ца в десяти́ мину́тах езды́ отсю́да. Вон в ту сто́рону.
– Excuse me, do you know, is there a hospital nearby?
– The nearest hospital is in ten minutes away. That way.

– Подскажи́те, как далеко́ отсю́да железнодоро́жный вокза́л?
– Не далеко́, мину́т пять пешко́м. Поверни́те на сле́дующем перекрёстке и вы его́ уви́дите.
– Tell me please, how far from here is the train station?
– Not far away, five minutes on foot. Turn at the next intersection and you’ll see it.

– Вы не подска́жете, как отсю́да добра́ться до пло́щади Конститу́ции?
– Э́то далеко́. Вам лу́чше сесть на авто́бус и́ли маршру́тное такси́. Остано́вка вон там, че́рез доро́гу.
– Could you tell me how to get from here to the square of Constitution?
– It’s far away. You’d better take a bus or taxi. The bus stop is over there, across the road.

– Прости́те, вы не подска́жете как нам пройти́ на на́бережную?
– Поверни́те напра́во, пото́м пря́мо и во́зле Макдональдса сно́ва напра́во.
– Excuse me, could you tell me how can we get to the embankment?
– Turn right, then straight ahead and near the McDonalds again to the right.
