Russian Present tense
In the previous lesson we’ve learned that all Russian verbs are divided into two groups called the first and second conjugations. Today we will learn how to conjugate the Russian verbs in the Present tense.
In Russian, unlike English, there is only one Present tense. It means that the phrase я де́лаю can be translated both as I do and I’m doing.
In order to form the Present tense from an infinitive, you need to drop the infinitive ending and to add one of the endings depending on the subject of the sentence.
The Present tense of the verbs of first conjugation
pronoun | verb ending |
---|---|
я | -у / -ю |
ты | -ешь / -ёшь |
он/она́/оно́ | -ет / -ёт |
мы | -ем / -ём |
вы | -ете / -ёте |
они́ | -ут / -ют |
For example:
знать – to know
я зна́ю
ты зна́ешь
он/она́/оно́ зна́ет
мы зна́ем
вы зна́ете
они́ зна́ют
расти́ – to grow
я расту́
ты растёшь
он/она́/оно́ растёт
мы растём
вы растёте
они́ расту́т
Keep in mind that in the verbs that end in -ОВАТЬ, the suffix -ОВ is replaced by -У in the Present tense. Have a look:
путеше́ствовать – to travel
я путеше́ствую
ты путеше́ствуешь
он/она́/оно́ путеше́ствует
мы путеше́ствуем
вы путеше́ствуете
они́ путеше́ствуют
The Present tense of the verbs of second conjugation
pronoun | verb ending |
---|---|
я | -у/-ю |
ты | -ишь |
он/она́/оно́ | -ит |
мы | -им |
вы | -ите |
они́ | -ат/ят |
For example:
говори́ть – to speak
я говорю́
ты говори́шь
он/она́/оно́ говори́т
мы говори́м
вы говори́те
они говоря́т
слы́шать – to hear (exception – belongs to the 2d conjugation despite the ending -АТЬ)
я слы́шу
ты слы́шишь
он/она́/оно́ слы́шит
мы слы́шим
вы слы́шите
они́ слы́шат
Pay attention: because the form of the verb already tells us who performs the action (I, you, them, etc.), the personal pronouns are often omitted.
