Housework and chores in Russian

We dedicate this lesson to housework and chores. Today you will learn some basic vocabulary related to such activities as washing dishes, laundry, cleaning and others, plus you will be able to practice it with examples and audio.

Keep in mind that when two verbs are given with a slash, the first of them is imperfective and the second one is perfective.

Washing dishes

мыть/помы́ть посу́дуto wash the dishes

У нас с му́жем нет разделе́ния кто мо́ет посу́ду. Кто ме́ньше за́нят в да́нный моме́нт, тот и мо́ет.
My husband and I have no rules about who washes the dishes. The one who is less busy at the moment does it.

Ра́ковина полна́ гря́зной посу́ды.
The sink is full of dirty dishes.

У нас есть но́вые гу́бки для посу́ды? Э́та уже́ никуда́ не годи́тся.
Do we have new dish sponges? This one is no good.

Э́то сре́дство для мытья́ посу́ды не подхо́дит для посудомо́йки.
This dishwashing detergent is not dishwasher safe.

Laundry

The conditioner makes clothes soft and pleasant to the touch.

Загрузи́те бельё в стира́льную маши́ну и закро́йте кры́шку.
Load linen in the washing machine and close the door.

Ironing

I have so much to iron!

Don’t forget to turn off the iron and put away the ironing board after ironing.

Брю́ки на́до отпа́рить, они́ совсе́м мя́тые.
Trousers need to be steam ironed, they are completely wrinkled.

Dusting

Е́сли ну́жно изба́вить от пы́ли каки́е-то труднодосту́пные места́, то мо́жно испо́льзовать ки́сти.
If you need to get rid of dust from some hard-to-reach places, then you can use brushes.

Ма́ма сказа́ла вы́мыть посу́ду и протере́ть пыль.
Mom said to wash the dishes and dust.

Смотри́ како́й слой пы́ли на ме́бели! Неси́ тря́пку, я вы́тру.
Look what a layer of dust on the furniture! Bring a rag, I’ll wipe it off.

Doing the floors

Take the mop, bucket and rag from the pantry.

      – выносить мусор / вынести мусор – take out the garbage
      – мусорное ведро – rubbish bin
