Lesson 103

Past Active Participle in Russian

In the previous lesson, we have learned how to form Present Active Participle in Russian. Today we will continue with the participle and will learn about the Past Active Participle.

Past Active Participle describes an action that has been finished or happened in the past and is now attributed to a person or object as their property. For example:

осты́вший ко́фе (ко́фе осты́л)
cold coffee (coffee got cold)

нача́вшийся дождь (дождь на́чался)
started rain – the rain has started

Past Active Participle works both with imperfective and perfective verbs:

челове́к, чита́вший кни́гу
person who was reading the book

челове́к, прочита́вший кни́гу
person who had read the book

Forming Past Active Participle

To form the Past Active Participle:

– Take the verb in the Past tense and remove the at the end;

– Add -вший / -вшая / -вшее / -вшие depending on gender and  number.

For example:

ду́мать (to think; imperfective)
ду́мал
ду́мавший / ду́мавшая / ду́мавшее / ду́мавшие

сде́лать (to do, to make; perfective)
сде́лал
сде́лавший / сде́лавшая / сде́лавшее / сде́лавшие

In case of the reflexive verbs, remove -ЛСЯ from the Past form, then add the respective ending and -СЯ at the end:

пыта́ться (to try, to seek)
пыта́лся
пыта́вшийся / пыта́вшаяся / пыта́вшееся / пыта́вшиеся

For the verbs that do not have an ending, add -ший / -шая / -шее / -шие instead:

расти́ (to grow, imperfective)
рос
ро́сший / ро́сшая / ро́сшее / ро́сшие

принести́ (to bring; perfective)
принёс
принёсший / принёсшая / принёсшее / принёсшие

Declension of Past Active Participle

When declined, the present active participles change their endings exactly like adjectives ending in -ШИЙ do:

G ду́мавшего ду́мавшей ду́мавшего ду́мавших
D ду́мавшему ду́мавшей ду́мавшему ду́мавшим
