Do you remember how to say “I like” in Russian? Today let’s learn some more ways to say that you like or dislike something.

Use нра́виться (to be liked, to please) to express that you like something:

Мне нра́вится э́та пе́сня.
I like this song.

Мне о́чень нра́вится италья́нская ку́хня.
I like Italian cuisine very much.

Use люби́ть (to love) to express that you really like or love something.

Я люблю́ э́ту пе́сню.
I love this song.

Я люблю́ э́ту гру́ппу.
I love this band.

О, как я люблю́ ба́бушкины пирожки́!
Oh how much I love grandmother’s pies!

Use обожа́ть (to adore) to express that you really very like something, that this thing excites you very much:

Я обожа́ю танцева́ть!
I love (adore) dancing!

Это мои люби́мые джи́нсы, я их про́сто обожа́ю!
These are my favorite jeans, I just adore them!

Use не нра́вится when you simply don’t like something:

Мне не нра́вятся таки́е шу́тки.
I don’t like this kind of jokes.

Use не о́чень нра́вится when you feel uncomfortable about something:

Мне не о́чень нра́вится в том рестора́не.
I do not really like that restaurant.

You can also say:

Мне не осо́бо нра́вится ката́ться на лы́жах.
I do not really like to ski.
(осо́бо: especially, particularly)

Мне не си́льно нра́вится здесь.
I do not really like being here.
(сильно: strongly)

Мне не бо́льно нра́вится э́та рабо́та.
I do not really like this work.
(больно: lit. – painful, here – not too much)

Use о́чень не нра́вится when something is really unpleasant to you:

Мне о́чень не нра́вится то, что происхо́дит.
I don’t like what is going on very much.

Use ненави́деть (to hate) to express that you hate something.

Ненави́жу дождь!
I hate rain!

Another way to express that you really don’t like something or that you can’t stand something is to say терпе́ть не могу́ (I can’t stand …):

Терпе́ть не могу́ оли́вки!
I hate (can’t tolerate) olives!

Он терпе́ть не мо́жет, когда́ его́ перебива́ют.
He hates being interrupted.

    *By the way

But the way, I, as a native speaker, wouldn’t use this word. Instead of it, I’d say “не очень“ (мне не очень нравится эта работа)

    1. Learn Russian Step by Step says:

Yes, of course. But we already have an example with не очень and wanted to give more possible ways to express the dislikes.

  3. Alina says:

Sorry but it’s not correct to translate “больно“ as “painfully” because in this case it means “I don’t really like this job” or “I don’t like this job very much”. So “не больно“ means “not very much“

    1. Learn Russian Step by Step says:

      Hello Alina,

Thank you for noticing, we’ve corrected the error.
