The Instrumental case with plural nouns

Russian grammar: Instrumental case

Today let’s learn how to form the Instrumental case with plural nouns.

If the word (of any gender) ends in …
… a consonant -> add ами
… а, о -> replace with ами
… other cases (including й and ь) -> replace the last letter with ями

Examples:

дом – дома́ми (house)
нож – ножа́ми (knife)
край – краями (edge)
конь – коня́ми (horse)
луна́ – лу́нами (moon)
гра́ница – грани́цами (border)
рука́ – рука́ми (hand)
неде́ля – неде́лями (week)
ста́нция – ста́нциями (station)
ли́цо – ли́цами (face)
зда́ние – зда́ниями (building)

Exceptions:

дочь – дочерьми́ (daughters)
мать – матеря́ми (mothers)
ребёнок – детьми́ (children)
челове́к – людьми́ (people)
де́рево – дере́вьями (trees)
дверь – дверьми́ (doors)
за́яц – за́йцами (hares)
