The Dative case with singular nouns

In the previous lesson we learned about the Dative case in Russian and when it is used. Today we will learn to form the Dative case with singular nouns.

Masculine nouns

For masculine nouns ending in …

… a consonant -> add у
й -> replace with ю
ь -> replace with ю

дом – до́му (house)
за́яц – за́йцу (hare)
нож – ножу́ (knife)
край – кра́ю (edge)
конь – коню́ (horse)

Feminine nouns

For feminine nouns ending in …
а -> replace with е
я -> replace with е, but
ия -> replace with и
ь -> replace with и

луна́ – луне́ (moon)
гра́ница – грани́це (boundary)
рука́ – руке́ (hand)
неде́ля – неде́ле (week)
ста́нция – ста́нции (station)
дверь – двери́ (door)

Neuter nouns

For neuter nouns ending in …
о -> replace with у
е -> replace with ю, but
це, же, ше, ще -> replace е with у

ли́цо – ли́цу (face)
окно – окну́ (window)
де́рево – де́реву (tree)
зда́ние – зда́нию (building)
со́лнце – со́лнцу (sun)
жилище́ – жили́щу (dwelling)
варе́нье – варе́нью (jam)
